Statistician- Microbiology

Our Client provides scientific, technical, and legislative support to the food, drinks and allied industries worldwide. 


Duties and Responsibilities


  • To provide a primary statistical service to the Microbiology Department. Other Departments at Our Client may also require statistical services on occasion. The work would include the design and analysis of scientific experiments, appropriate calculations, multivariate statistics. Provision of advice to external clients on sampling plans, control charts and sampling for food safety. Design and analysis of compliance surveys. Helping scientific staff in the use of specialist graphics eg. advanced graphs in R. Learning, use and advice in the statistics involved in method validation and verification, particularly in the statistics used in ISO 16140.

  • Experimental design in microbial growth/death modelling and fitting of models in R.

  • Provision of information on microbiological uncertainty of measurement calculation based on appropriate standards, and the analysis of proficiency data.

  • Specialist help in the area of bioinformatics and handling of “big” data would be required.

  • The job may also require participation in ISO Standards committees, providing advice in the use of statistics in microbiology.

 

  

Qualifications and Competencies:

  

Degree or equivalent in a mathematics or statistics subject, with post graduate experience of the use of statistical tools in an industrial setting and in experimental science (design & analysis of experiments). Any previous experience in using statistical in food science and particularly microbiology will be looked on very favourably.

Use of packages such as Excel, Minitab, R and R Studio would be required. Experience/understanding of the requirements of bioinformatics information analysis.

  

Skills:

 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to converse with those having little/no statistical understanding/skill, to pass on key information and allow them to understand statistical requirements.

  • Also having an ability to communicate with other expert statisticians (potentially at national / international level) to discuss key points and come to agreement.

  • Ability to make presentations to industrial and scientific groups and internal and external meetings, some at international level.

  • Overall a friendly, can-do attitude to all work and requests with an excellent ability to multitask.
